Issue #25 - 3 Money Making Secrets Every Monday 3/17/2003
Welcome to ALL you new subscribers ... especially from BAIPA.
Money Making Secret #1 - Self-Publishing Hall of Fame
You're in GREAT company if you have self published your book. Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert comic strip and book series. Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson originally self-published The One-Minute Manager so they could sell the book for $15.00. Gordon Miller, a Denver salesman who quadrupled his $40,000 salary by changing jobs four times in five years, self-published Quit Your Job Often and Get Big Raises.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Joe Sabah, co-author of How to Get the Job You Really Want and Get Employers to Call You and author of best seller How to Get On Radio Talk Shows All Across America Without Leaving Your Home or Office.
John Kremer of www.bookmarket.com lists over 100 self publishers who have 'hit it big.' I had the opportunity to share the platform with John at the BAIPA (Bay Area Independent Publishers Association) annual college last Saturday in San Rafael, California. John is a warm enthusiastic speaker and sure knows his stuff, having published 1001 Ways to Market Your Book.

Money Making Secret #2 - What Is a Sound Bite?
In the electronic media, a sound bite, is a short sentence in response to a question from the interviewer.
In real life, a sound bite, could/should be a quick answer to a question asked by a friend, or neighbor, or business associate.
I remember my friend John going on and on and on with an answer to a question I posed to him. He smiled and then finished by saying "That was a 50 cent answer to a 5 cent question. Wasn't it?"
After a short answer, you can always ask: "Does that answer your question or do you need more information?"
In today's marketplace brevity is King or Queen. Example: CNN Headline News ... quickie items to catch you up on 'around the world in 30 minutes.'
Test this out in your next conversation. See how it works for you!

Money Making Secret #3 - Add Acting to Your Presentation
My #1 enjoyment is speaking. Right along with speaking I enjoy adding 'acting' or 'role-playing' to my presentations.
Last Saturday at the BAIPA publishing college in Marin County I chose to open my presentation dressed in my bathrobe, telephone headset on my head and role-played a Radio Talk Show Interview. I brought in Sally Hostess in Kalamazoo, Michigan in a make-believe situation ... much better that 'just' speaking. The audience appreciated my attempt at levity, and my willingness to step out of the traditional speaker/seminar leader role.
What are you doing to 'lighten up' your presentations? I'd like to hear your story. Plus permission to 'pass it on.' We can all learn from one another. As a wise person once said: "Not a one of us is as smart as ALL OF US."
